30 Is Not In Fact The New 20

D.West
Head Writer

"30's the new 20 nigga, I'm so hot still" - Jay-Z

That's a half true statement. It's 2012, and Hov is still atop the charts, making great classic music, however 30 is not in fact the new 20. It's the exact same 30 it's always been. This past month I turned 28, and as I inch ever closer to the big three zero I find myself coming to grips with this realization.

When I was 20 I was in college,  drinking literally every night, smoking much weed as possible, and living as though I had no tomorrow. If I got fired from a job, I found a new one. If I broke a bone it healed in what seemed to be two weeks, and I had no semblance of an actual emotional relationship.

family man..?!
Fast forward 8 years. When I get drunk now my body makes me pay for it for 3 days afterwards. If I even smell weed in a public place I bitch about how someone could be so irresponsible as to smoke weed where children could be present. I worry about my families future. I'm terrified at the prospect of losing my job. If I break a bone the shit stays broken. I'm a father,  and I have been married for the past two years to the same woman I've been with for the past six. This is what 30 looks like
--to me at least.

I'm not sure if the terms creation sits squarely on the shoulders of Jay-Z or not. Research into the terms origin only turned up the lyrics to his song "30 Something" though I'm pretty sure I'd heard the term used before I'd heard that song. My guess would be that generations previous to ours had a tendency to do things earlier. They got into the workforce earlier, they got married earlier, and they had stable lives much earlier.

shit was hot back in the day...
not if you're still wearing it though
These days you're lucky to find many people who are closing in on 30 actually acting as though they're closing in on 30. The statement "30s the new 20" is just a way for people who are almost 30 to justify acting and doing things they way they did when they were 20 and feeling ok with it.

blame mtv!
Really look at our culture. Look at your friends. Do they dress how they did in college? Listen to the same music? Go to the same bars? Live by the same rules and standards? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, in my opinion something's wrong. Look there's nothing wrong with breaking out the cargo shorts on the weekend. And far be it from me to tell you to not dust off that "Country Grammar" album on a nice spring day. But when you're making a habit out of being the same person you were ten years ago, that's a problem. At 20 would you feel comfortable acting 10? Would you feel cool      saying "20s the new 10 dogg!" No. No you would not.

Life is about two things: Relationships, and growth. And you can't have one without the other--well, allow me to rephrase-- you can't have a successful relationship without growth. The person you are when you're 20 should not be who you are at 25, nor should the person you are at 25 be the same as the person you are at 30. And that's just natural progression. At 30 you should simply want more for yourself than the same shit hole bar you've been going to for 5 years. Or the same petty drama and problems you were dealing with when you were young. To me that only makes sense.

90's the new 15 NIGGA!
If 30 is the new 20, then where does it stop? Does that make 50 the new 40? And in turn does that make 70 the new 60? Oh and watch out! Because word on the street is 90s the new 80! Seems ridiculous I know, but it's not any more ridiculous than people in their 30s or on their way, desperately trying to hold onto their 20s because they're afraid to move on and quite simply have nothing to move on to because they've wasted their ENTIRE 20s doing the things that most of us only spend the first half of our 20s doing.

So when your 30th birthday comes around, do yourself a favor and cancel the keg. Hold off on heading out to the club. And for god sake stay away from that hole in the wall bar you and your college roommate loved so much. In short be 30! Grow up! Going out and getting "shitfaced" on your birthday is kids stuff. And deep down inside even you know it.

Leave the kids stuff to the children you're not taking care of...But that of course is an entirely different article...

Bronx Graffiti Film "GIMME THE LOOT" Takes Home Big Prize From SXSW

New York-based writer/director Adam Leon’s first feature, called Gimme Some Loot, took home the big prize (the Grand Jury Prize for best narrative feature) at SXSW’s film festival this year. The story follows a pair of teenage Bronx graffiti artists throughout two summer days, and stars Tysheeb Hickson and Tashiana R. Washington. On their Kickstarter, they describe the plotline:

"When Malcolm and Sofia’s latest graffiti masterpiece is buffed by a rival gang, these two determined Bronx teens must hustle, steal, and scheme to get spectacular revenge and become the biggest writers in the City."

The film was shot last summer all over New York City, and Leon says, “‘we wanted to do hits, B-sides and rarities,’ with some scenes in iconic New York City locations, and others in places that have been mostly unexplored on the big screen. ‘We were in 50 locations. We wanted to be all over the city, in a rich person’s home, in a bodega, in the middle of Queens in the rain. We wanted to be this kind of low-budget epic.’” And for the graffiti aspect, they brought in the legendary SP1 as an adviser, though ArtsBeat says “the film contains very little graffiti writing.”

Local Artist Spotlight:C10 - Here We Go Again (Official Video & BIO)

The Street Evol is proud to introduce to you C10!

Nowadays rappers come a dime a dozen, but Columbus, Oh native C10 is determined to stand out
from the pack. C10 (real name Chad Tennant) found a love for music at the early age of 11 when his father bought him a trumpet. He then learned how to read music and soon started writing raps. Shortly after he started producing and recording his own tracks. “I still remember my first rap, ‘are we rough enough’. Even then I was all about battle rapping.”

After a short stint in college, 10 returned to his hometown and cofounded Omnibreed,a group of friends who chased the same dream. Omnibreed went on to release several underground projects, (many of which contained production by the artist himself) and performed at countless venues allowing 10 to perfect his craft and showmanship. In 2007, C10 debuted his solo project titled “The Teacher.” Enthusiastic feedback from listeners certifies this album as an indie classic. Two years later, C10 was back in the studio and released his second solo production called “Cut The Check.” Not only did the project show growth in lyrical prowess, the effort solidified him as one of the most renowned acts in the midwest.

Currently C10 is concentrating on feeding his budding fan base. Opening up for national artist like Talib Kweli, Too Short and Ghostface Killa to name a few. He is set to release several new projects, one of which include an album titled “Burning Bridges”. Other projects soon to be released is a Volume 3 Omnibreed mixtape as well as an untitled album with his newest collaboration The Luxury League. When C10 is asked how does he stay motivated, he had this to say “Im just not gonna stop doing what I believe in, period. nOW THATS WHATS UP! He has recently opened for Big K.R.I.T. Instagram Reaches 27 Million Registered Users – Android App is on the Way

Instagram, the whimsical photo-sharing app that combines some of the best aspects of social media platforms Twitter and Tumblr, has cleared the 27 million user mark. More interesting about this figure, is that over 67% of those users are still active, having used the app within the last 24 hours. Instagram’s Co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger revealed at SXSW that now that they’ve scaled enough to meet the needs of iPhone users, an Android app isn’t too far from release, opening up the platform to an entirely new user base. Kreiger hints that in some ways, the Android version is even better than its iPhone counterpart. An official launch date has yet to be revealed, but like most announcements of this nature in the tech world, it shouldn’t be too far off.

Shepard Fairey Could Face Jail Time for Obama “Hope” Poster

OBEY GIANT‘s Shepard Fairey now faces possible jail time of up to 6 months in the embarrassing saga surrounding his Obama “Hope” poster. While the case pertaining to the copyright infringement protection of an Associated Press-owned photograph of Obama–the very image Fairey admittedly artistically reused in the Hope campaign–was settled last year behind closed doors, the federal courts have now laid on the Los Angeles-based street artist charges of contempt. In a statement last Friday by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, Fairey apparently “went to extreme lengths to obtain an unfair and illegal advantage in his civil litigation, creating fake documents and destroying others in an effort to subvert the civil discovery process.” The accused artist has pled guilty to the charges.

HBO's Frat House (Never before seen footage)

Coming from a Fraternity myself, I still find this crazy interesting. It shows the more extreme side of Fraternities. Also shows the Fraternity of die aspect of the brothers. Check out the description below.

In the late Nineties, following his first documentary Hated, Todd Phillips and fellow director Andrew Gurland filmed an HBO America Undercover episode called Frat House. The aim was to uncover the truth behind rumored atrocities pledges had to endure for initiation into college fraternities. At one point, Phillips himself pledged the frat to gain access. The results were so out there the filmmakers were accused of staging the events portrayed in the film, and the final version never aired on HBO.

Frat House first premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary. That was before the allegations surfaced, though, and even with Phillips and Gurland standing by the fact that the events portrayed are real, the controversy was enough for HBO to blackball the film.

Nike SB Dunk Low - Crown Royal - April 2012

Inspired by Canada's preferred Whisky is the all new upcoming "Crown Royal" Nike SB Dunk Low.

Utilizing Crown Royal's signature color sheme, we see the SB Dunk Low working with a ready to be skated purple and gold suede upper. Dark purple handles most of the upper and tongue, while gold hits the leather Swoosh, laces, tongue liner and tongue tag. White hits the tongue branding, along with the midsole, which leads to a purple outsole down below.

The "Crown Royal" Nike SB Dunk Low is scheduled to release this April at select Nike SB retailers.
