In 1976 The man who started it all! dunk has been repeated by almost everyone from Jordan to Dwight Howard, but Dr. J was the Originator and The ABA was not as flashy as the NBA would later become but he definitely was wowed the ABA crowds with this magical event. JULIUS ERVING'S JUMP FROM THE FOUL LINE
THE FIRST NBA SLAM DUNK COMPETITION
The 1984 Slam Dunk Contest was one of the 5 major events that led to the birth-year of the basketball and hip-hop culture fusion that is known today as The "Dunkadelic-Era" In America, 1984-Present. Even though Dr. J lost to Larry Nance in this one, we must Thank him, for his influence because Dr. J is truly the "Godfather of Basketball".
WHO SAYS YOU HAVE TO BE TALL TO DUNK?!
At 5'7 Spud Webb is the shortest guy to ever win the Slam Dunk Contest. He went against his teammate Dominique Wilkins in the 1986 contest and beat him. What made Spud Webb's dunks so incredible, other than the fact he was 5'7 was that he could not palm the basketball! Michael Jordan was even impressed!
AIR JORDAN VS. THE HUMAN HIGHLIGHT REEL
These two greats has multiple timeless moments in the dunk contest and this video perfectly portrays that. These two built a rivalry that Kobe and Lebron could be compared to today. From their competitiveness to their shoe war (Reebok pumps vs. Nike Air) they will never be forgotten and built the NBA/Hiphop culture. (check out Jordan with the gold chains!!)
DEE BROWN PUMPS UP HIS REEBOKS
Now this was a classic contest from start to finish. The 1991 Dunk contests came down to Shawn Kemp and Dee Brown. Dee won over the crowd early by pumping up his Reeboks. Then to top it off did a no look dunk that drove the crowd crazy!
HAROLD MINER=BABY JORDAN?
From dunkers like Cedric Ceballos, Kenny "The Jet" Smith, John Starks & Shawn Kemp to name a few the 1993 Slam Dunk Contest was action packed. However, even with all those great dunkers people kept buzzing about Harold Miner who was nick named "Baby Jordan". His career didn't exactly pan out that way and the closest he came to Jordan was winning this contest twice!
ISAIAH RIDER'S "EAST BAY FUNK DUNK"
The 1994 Slam Contest was another classic and came down to Shawn Kemp vs. Isaiah Rider. Rider won with his Dunk between his legs. " Rider called it the "East Bay Funk Dunk." At the time, Sir Charles said it "might be the best dunk I've ever seen. Whatever it's called, this dunk is now a much-copied classic and dunkers are still doing it today.
VIN-SANITY
Probably one of the greatest dunk contest performances ever. From start to finish Vince just knew he was going to win. With his very first dunk, Kenny "The Jet" Smith said it perfectly "LET'S GO HOME!" His dunks were so incredible that fans and players alike did not know how to react. He won this one hands down! The
WHO NEEDS LEBRON??
The 2003 Slam Dunk Contest came down to the Wire between Desmond Mason and Jay Richardson. This was the dunk contest that people were buzzing about and wanted Lebron to be in, but he was still in H.S but was the first overall pick later that year. Even without Lebron's buzz it was still classic. Especially with the dunk that J Rich did to win it..
THE 2006 CONTROVERSY
There was lots of controversy in this one, some say Andre Iguodala should have won. Either way it was still a classic. The moment that sealed it for Nate was when he brought out the original vertically challenged Dunker, Spud Webb and Jumped over him.
GOTTA HAVE SWAGGER!
The 2009 Dunk Contest was probably the last great one. It showed original creativity and lots of Swagger. It came down to Nate Robinson and Dwight Howard. This one had all kinds of crazy dunks and dance moves! The Superman debuted and Nate recreated his jump over Spud Webb by Jumping over Dwight. That sealed it up as Nate Robinson ended up taking the title.
2011 BLAKE GRIFFIN???
Blake Griffin is the favorite to win it this year. His in game dunks have just been incredible. This Video shows his top ten Dunks since November. There has not been a player with this much buzz since Vince Carter. Lets see how creative Blake can get!
